Croup... PDF

Inflammation and narrowing of the air passages in children as a result of infection or obstruction. The symptoms are a barking cough, hoarseness, and stridor (a wheezing, grunting noise when the child inhales).

Treatment - Practical Advice

Provide as much humidity in the child’s room as possible, by means of a humidifier or by placing bowls of water near radiators. During a severe attack of coughing, take the child to a steamy bathroom: the humidity will help relieve the attack. Stay with the child and try to keep him/her calm.

Herbal

Elecampane infusion is helpful in expelling phlegm and soothing the voice box and lungs: pour a cup of cold water onto 1 teaspoon of the shredded root, let it stand overnight, heat up and drink hot three times daily.

Homeopathy

Night coughing, if the child is breathless and panicked: give one dose of Aconite 6c, and another 30 minutes later if the child is still awake. For a very dry, barking cough, which sounds like sawing wood: Spongia 6c, one dose, and another 30 minutes later.

Orthodox

Most cases of croup are mild and pass quickly. If the infection persists, antibiotics are prescribed. If the child is unable to breathe, or is turning blue, obtain medical help immediately.
