Frozen Shoulder... PDF


Restricted movement and pain in the shoulder joint which may be caused by torn muscle fibres and inflammation. The surrounding ‘capsule’ or covering of the joint itself becomes irritated. An obvious symptom of frozen shoulder is pain which occurs when lifting the arm sideways, making tasks such as brushing hair or dressing difficult.


Treatment -
Hydrotherapy

Make an ice pack by wrapping ice cubes or a packet of frozen peas in kitchen towel. Prepare a hot water bottle and wrap a towel around it. Hold the ice pack over the area of pain for 3 minutes, followed by the hot water bottle for 3 minutes. Repeat the procedure 3 times and carry out several times daily. Gentle swimming in warm water is a good way to loosen the shoulder and allow for more movement. Some hospitals have swimming pools in their physiotherapy units.


Massage

If your shoulder is affected, support the left elbow with your right hand, and pass the left hand over the affected shoulder. Starting close to the neck, squeeze the large muscle which passes over the shoulder blade. Try to lift the muscle as you squeeze, working all the way down to the shoulder. Repeat several times. If the left shoulder is affected, reverse the process. With elbow still supported, use your fingertips to stroke firmly down from the side of the top of the neck all way along the shoulder to the shoulder joint. Repeat the procedure several times.


Acupressure

Make a fist and gently pound on the tops of your shoulders, from the joint, up to your neck. Curve your fingers and hook them over the top of your shoulders. Feel for the area of tension and allow your thumb to sink into it. Press firmly for 1 minute then relax.


Exercise

Place a rolled towel under the affected armpit, and use the free arm to pull the elbow into the side of the body. This levers the upper arm, stretching the capsule of the shoulder joint.


Professional Help

Self treatment of frozen shoulder is very slow, and can be greatly aided by professional help from an osteopath or chiropractor. Acupuncture is helpful in relieving pain. The Alexander Technique will help if the problem is caused by postural problems.
